Summary Two archaeologists hosting the TV show America’s Lost Vikings decided to use color 3D scanning to try and determine the true age of this controversial artifact. The Goal To precisely scan in under one hour a large runestone, and then process the scans into an extremely detailed 3D model which they would then use for depth measurement and comparison of the engraved runes. Tools Used Artec Eva & Space Spider For more than a century now, historians and scientists

3D Scanning of Basilica – Norfolk
Client: The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Norfolk, VA is faced with an aging building in need of a plan to preserve its historical significance. Architect and church member, William Bissell, began to work with the church to produce a Historic Structure Report (HSR). The purpose of an HSR is to provide documentary, graphic, and physical information about a property’s history and existing condition. The HSR outlines a scope of recommended work or repair and serves
3D Scanning of Mechanical Rooms
Client: A local mechanical design contractor was faced with engineering a complete MEP overhaul at MSP International Airport. Existing documentation of the site was outdated, incomplete, inaccurate, and difficult to obtain. 3D laser scanning was utilized to help facilitate the process to complete the building information of what was already existing. Project: The Laser Design team utilized a number of different scanners (Leica P30 and FARO Focus 120), to laser scan all MEP equipment to capture 3D data (Point Cloud)

3D Scanning of a Hospital Boiler Room
A bustling Midwestern hospital needed to make design changes to their 2-story boiler room. Having a visual representation in 3D would allow the hospital to make the necessary design changes to accommodate the new boiler. There were 2 floors to the boiler room as well as a pump area at the hospital needing to be scanned.
Pacific Eagle Uses 3D Scanning to Rental Units into Condos
Pacific Eagle came to the Laser Design team to 3D laser scan 4 rental unit buildings and create a 3D Revit model so they could make their design changes virtually before starting construction on the new project to create condo units.

CT Analysis of Metal 3D Printed Parts
The printing of 3D metal parts is incredibly difficult. For example the slightest impurity in powered metal can be scanned and used, hit with a laser and popped creating a void inside that material that the next layer can easily cover up. If that void becomes denser and/or is in areas of high stress, the part can break and not support the intended weight. This is not yet a consistent or repeatable process yet and the only way to eliminate errors is with computer topography. More importantly, CT is able to do this without destroying the part being printed.
CyberOptics hits hypergrowth with faster 3-D scanning products
CyberOptics Corp. shares have tripled in value this year, performing better for investors than any other Minnesota-based company, and one of the reasons is a new device that makes very fast, very accurate 3-D scans of physical objects.
As Featured in SME: New Uses of Noncontact Metrology in Aerospace
Article first appeared on SME’s Advanced Manufacturing The question of how users can compare accuracy of one device to the next remains challenging Aircraft manufacturers are finding noncontact metrology ever more useful. Its inherent high throughput and decreasing cost is complementing the industry’s ramp-up to meet the world’s appetite for more airplanes. However, throughput needs to be balanced with accuracy in finding the right applications as noncontact embraces a variety of devices. “Noncontact metrology is either laser or optical based,”
